Thread: Churchie's JRM-1DC Build

Probably didn't aim it at me, however I'm currently re-staining a squier tele with yellow india ink and whilst applying Tru-Oil over the top, discovered that there are some areas that should have been sealed beforehand.

    cheers, Mark.

You'd think during this down-time they'd suspend the rental fee?

    cheers, Mark.

Man, that sucks. I have to say we have really great internet at our place (touch wood) - and as internet connection is way more important than postal service these days, I really shouldn't complain.

I think I saw somewhere that you should put the grain filler after the stain coat as the grain filler stops the stain to absorb fully. Then you colour the filler with some stain to match the stain coat and apply over the stain coat. Also, Timbemate is a water based product which is not compatible with Dingotone solvent based product. So you should use an oil based filler I believe.

I should add I am not a finishing expert so would appreciate more expert comments from others.

All this is of interest to me as I am soon to start my first build ES-5V with an all over Butterscotch finish.

    Cheers

    Hi guys,

Steve is correct that Timbermate is a water based product and DT is oil based....

    however......

I can speak from experience, you can use timbermate as a grain fill and it reacts very well with DT. I always put timbermate first then apply DT over the top, it doesn't stop the stain coat soak in and brings out quite a lustre in the stain. I usually use at least 4 stain coats for the deepest colour with a week curing in between, then 3 -4 intensifying coats again with a week between. the intensifying coats should be applied thinly.

    Sorry Steve, no disrespect intended

Thanks for clarifying Andy - that was my plan - Timbermate and DT. Either Walnut or Ebony

Oooh nice - I like that.

I will be using DT Buttersctotch. Have been advised to be patient between coats and check if I like the colour

    Hi Churchie

Presume you will be using white timbermate?

I was considering a dark timbermate to make the grain show more, then butterscotch DT

    Ugh. Australia Post....

After no change on the tracking for my Kit since December 21st, it is now back in Western Australia for some reason......

So it took 2 days to get from WA to VIC, then sat in VIC for almost two weeks, now is back in WA.

Starting to think I'll never see it
