    DIY fretboard straightedge

A notched straight edge is a useful tool for checking fretboard flatness/relief, but getting one from StewMac is $120 plus shipping.

Today I grabbed a 1m long piece of aluminium that's 3mm thick and 32mm wide - about $9.40 from the green shed. I then marked off the fret positions (25.5" scale length) using an existing neck on one side, and on the other side the fret positions for 34" scale bass. First step was using a small triangle file to make sure I stayed true to the mark, then a round file to open the notches out.

Once finished a quick file of the sharp corners, and a quick rub on the flat faces with some wet and dry and she's good to go. Just thought I'd share in case anyone else wants to whip one up - it's a very simple 30min job.

I made one exactly the same way with square notches instead of half-round notches as I didn't have a round file back then, ... is as straight as it needs to be and works a treat at a tenth of the price ...
