After 24 hours I removed everything and it seems like the veneering process worked out. Some glue found its way through in a couple spots but overall it is pretty flat and well adhered.
I trimmed the excess from the edges with a utility knife and then sanded to blend it into the existing rounded edge. I'd say that I'm pretty happy with the result. Just have to give some thought on whether or not to try and even out the colour difference between the sides and the back now.

Noice. That veneer grain looks like magnetic lines of force emanating from the Center of the guitar. Or perhaps I’m overthinking that.😁😜

@FrankenWashie Yeah the crotch figuring is definitely reminiscent of magnetic lines of force. I was hoping to get them to swoop down the ends of the V a little better but was limited in how I could position the veneer due to the size of the sheets.
@Fretworn I like to think that the back of the guitar can be just as nice as the front. You have to have something to show the crowd when you put it up over your head and play it upside down after all.
Tonight I mixed up some walnut wood filler and did some grain filling after sanding the body down to 400 grit.

Work on this project continues with grain filling and sanding completed on the neck.
I've been trying to think of some good ways to add a little extra to this build and dug through my pizza box of assorted veneers for some inspiration. I landed on a strange greyish wood that had an almost metallic quality to it under the lights that looked like it could give me a headstock veneer and pickguard. The dark grey should provide some interesting and unique contrast.
Now the headstock required a little TLC to prepare for the veneer. I chiseled around the inside edge of the binding and sanded the rest down to the appropriate thickness. With the shape traced onto some paper the next step will be to cut out the veneer.

Shaping a veneer when there is binding already in place is a tricky thing. There are some gaps around the edges but I think filler should take care of it. I think it will look pretty good in the end though.
I put some masking tape on the body to trace out a reduced pickguard to try and minimize the amount of the spalted maple that gets covered while still complimenting the body shape. This should look good in the silvery wood tone. I'm thinking of routing the shape to inset the pickguard into the body.
Hopefully I can start on finishing this soon.

Today we determine where I fall on the bold-stupid axis for this project. I got out the router and went to town on the beautiful custom veneer to do the pickguard recess. It was a scary process but I managed to not totally destroy the guitar so I'll call that a win. Here is a photo of the routing in progress. I'll just need to get into the corners with a chisel to finish it off.

nice job, btw, routing through veneers etc. is never not nerve wracking.

It's been a lamination day. I superglued the (possibly) Indian silver greywood veneer to a chunk of pickguard plastic and glued the veneer onto the headstock. The one annoyance left is the jack location. I wish it was just in the side so it didn't need its own cover.
