    EX7 build

Hi - just staring to put together an EX7 with my 13 year old son. Looking forward to having some fun in the process and hopefully he ends up with a pretty cool guitar! Ordered the Floyd Rose tremolo arm, but can't find any instructions on how to mount it, so could do with some help from someone who's done one (successfully!).
    Cheers
    Evan

Welcome Evan. It will be great fun to work with your kid on this build. I have no experience with this kit so I'll leave it up to others who have for the answer on your question.

Hi Evan, Welcome to the forum.

Installing a Floyd Trem on an Explorer will most likely require some serious routing. Hope you're up for the challenge?

    Cheers, Waz

Depending on the specific manufacturer they may have some online printable routing guides or patterns from which to make your own routing templates.
Stewart MacDonald also have range of premade templates for the purpose.
You're going to need to accurately mark a centre line on both sides to line things up. If you use the reference fret position calculator on the Stewart MacDonald site it gives you a reference distance from the nut for the mounting posts.

It's going to be a fair amount of very careful measuring, and you are going to need a good router, good quality carbide bits with bearings to follow the router templates and some accurate drilling and hogging out to make the routing easier.

Can't wait to hear him fire it up! So far we've got the neck glued on and applied the base coats - using a clear finish to highlight the grain of the quilted maple top.
If I can figure out how to upload some photos I'll do that in due course.

Hi Evan, I just had a quick search for Floyd set up vids; searching "set up floyd rose bridge video".

There's a lot of results and I remember using one when i first set up an SV-1 all those years ago.

I don't know which one to recommend, but this one looks appropriate: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJGmm5GYD1g

For others in this thread, Evan has an EXA-7 Custom, with the FR Bridge routing done. So, his issue is setting up the bridge, not routing.

I'm not much help as I haven't really used the FR Bridges.
    Cheers,

    Adam

I can probably answer most of your Floyd questions, I have two Floyds and an Edge. The Gelvin video suggested by Adam, gives a good overview. Good luck sounds like a great project.
