    Sonics Build No.6 - The Triple Black-O-Caster

Here we go again with yet another build I wasn't planning on doing.

Some old neighbours of ours came around for a visit and it turns out their teenage son has been getting pretty into guitar. So of course I let him have a play of some of my builds. With Christmas approaching his parents have asked me to put together a nice starter guitar for him.

He really is just starting out, so doesn't understand the differences between all the various brands and models. After a bit of back and forth it became clear he basically wants a black strat, with black pickguard - not a bad place to start I reckon.

Now I did make it clear that for the cost of the kit + some minor upgrades and finishing they could grab a brand new Squire, but they'd prefer to have something with a little bit more personal history. Fine by me, it'll be a straight forward enough build. I haven't been planning on building any black guitars (Or any strats for that matter) as I already have a few, so a good opportunity to try and do the best finish I can.

Plan is pretty simple, black, sealed maple neck, custom decal, grovers and nut upgrade and that's it. I am tossing up putting a Babicz bridge on it, but it might be overkill for what they are after... I do like those things though.

I did have a slight hiccup with the first kit I received - it had a white scratch plate and a neck that was a bit rougher than I've come to expect from Pitbull. As usual, Adams amazing customer service saved the day and he was more than happy to supply a new kit as per order with a much better neck. Between the support on this forum and Adams willingness to work with the customer, it's no wonder this hobby is going so well.

Anyway, replacement kit arrived today.....away we go

First jobs done. Checked the neck fit, lined up the bridge and drilled pilot holes for the neck and bridge. Did a bit of refining of the pick guard around the end of the neck. Then onto some body mods, reducing the heel in a similar way to what I did on the Sonicaster. I really don't like how big a lump of wood is back there, even on real Fenders. Started shaping the headstock in a fairly familiar shape.

I've run out of time this arvo, but happy to have made a start. I'll finish the head stock shaping and then settle in for some sanding. Being a shiny black finish I'm going to take my time and get it really nice and flat. I'd like to get some paint on it this weekend, but I'll see how I go.

Well I've never seen that mod done.
Now that you have pointed it out, that's yet another area to investigate hehe.

Looking forward to another entertaining build.

    cheers, Mark.

Hmmm, now you're giving me ideas...

Cool project though. A squire is easy, but this is way cooler

Might need shorter neck screws otherwise they may poke through the fret board given the amount of meat taken off the back.

Yeah definitely, I just pruned 5mm or so off them when I did this on the Sonicaster.

Bit more done in between work this morning. Sprayed a very light 'Guide Coat' on the body to help me block it back (if you do this make sure the paint is compatible with what ever you are finishing with later!). Using 120grit as the basswood is pretty soft, and a big flat sanding block.

You can see how the low points stay dark, this is something that will absolutely be evident under a gloss black finish. It's just a matter of working at it. It's also important to change directions with the block. So follow the grain, then do it at 90 degrees to the grain, then cross hatch at 45 both ways. This will give you the flattest possible surface.

You can see it's shown up some wobbles in the radius around the body and where the forearm relief is. I worked back and forth on the forearm relief with the block until it closed up the low point and gave a nice straight transition. I'm going to round off the bit I scalloped off the back as well to make it suit the rest of the guitar a bit better.

Next task will be to go around the radius and make sure it's consistent. Then I'll start using a softer block and finer grade paper to blend all the edges.

Hand crafting guitars, because Death Rays are expensive.

Damn good idea to help with smoothing off the high & low points.
