Wah pedal screeching issue in toe down position

    Hey everyone,

I hope some people out there can help.

    Hardware setup is as follows:

-Line 6 Spider IV 75 guitar amp linked via ethernet cable to FBV Shortboard MKII. This is on a "clean" channel and I use the wah effect off the FBV Shortboard MKII which interfaces to the internal amp switches.

-Korg Toneworks AX1000G. It has the better pedal effects except the wah because on the pedal on this has not much travel for what I am looking for.

I'm running a lead from the guitar jack to the input jack on the Korg Toneworks AX1000G and an output from there to an input jack on the Line 6 Spider IV 75 guitar amp which works perfectly well.

However when I engage the wah on the FBV Shortboard MKII and travel to toe position down it is a "screeching wah" sound especially with distortion on so I would like to fix that.

I hope that makes sense and appreciate any input. Thank you.

    Cheers,

    Alkay.

The FBV is a line 6 item so should work fine with the amp - I'm wondering if it is it's position in the chain causing this...
Is it possible to try combinations of it before the korg, after it etc?

    Hi Stan,

Cheers for the reply. Not possible because the FBV is linked to the amp with an ethernet cable. It only interfaces with the amp's internal effects. In this case I'm only trying to use the wah on the amp with a "clean" sound so I run the other effects through the Korg. eg. distortion, phaser, flanger, etc.

Hope that clears it up thank you.

    Cheers,

    Alkay.

    Hey Dedman,

Yeah they are, I'll do some testes tomorrow to rule that out.

    Good point

Are we talking nasty feedback screech? A wah pedal will emphasise feedback frequencies, and the digital nature of your setup might mean you get a nastier feedback, rather than a more musical one. If you turn the amp 90 degrees does it still happen?

Wah pedals were notorious for not playing nicely with other pedals, such as the venerable Fuzz Face, if it was placed so that it was going into another pedal in the signal chain, this was due to the fact that the output of the Wah pedal needed a buffer.

My JD Crybaby Mini wah screeches in the toe down position if I'm playing with a distorted sound. I didn't manage to turn the pedal off at my last gig (though I though I had) and kept wondering where all the feedback was coming from. As Fretworn rightly says, it's just the high level of boost at high frequencies plus a possible overload of the Line 6's A/D converter resulting in some digital clipping as well. It may also be stimulating any microphonic tendencies your pickups have.
