    Hi All

Hi. I am contemplating making my own guitar, so any Newbie guides that you can provide will be appreciated.

I am thinking about spraycan painting v a wood style design. No doubt, my further looking on here will help me.

Hi HBG, welcome to the forum. I assume you are going to order a kit ? Any idea what kit you are looking at ?

Once we work out what type of timber it is and if it has a veneer or not we can help you decide and recommend a build plan
    Current Builds and status
scratch end grain pine tele - first clear coat on !
    JBA-4 - assembled - final tweaks
Telemonster double scale tele - finish tobacco burst on body and sand neck

    Completed builds
scratch oak.rose gum Jazzmaster - assembled needs setup
    MK-2 Mosrite - assembled - play in
Ash tele with Baritone neck - neck pup wiring tweaks and play in

A finishing oil is apparently pretty easy for beginners, with some wood stain underneath can be easier to work with than solid colours.

Hi Hbg and welcome. Stains, waxes and spray finishes all have their plus and minus points. A lot depends on the kit you buy, the wood it's made from, what the grain patterns are like and how well the pieces of wood that make it match in colour and grain pattern. It's probably best to be open-minded about it until your kit actually arrives.

welcome on deck HBG, this is a pretty open and friendly forum and there's lots of folks who'll help out if you ask a question or for advice.
Pick your kit, check out the grain in the wood when it arrives and that will likely guide you on which way to go.
Photos with your questions will get you loads of advice and you can pick up a lot of useful tips by going through the build diaries of guys who've already built that kit. Above all, have a crack and enjoy the experience!

I'm pretty easy going. I am looking at a Les Paul style, with a Cherry Red finish.
