Just about everything I read or watched from the USA mentions using naphtha to clean down the guitar before painting, spraying, etc.
I haven't been able to find it in Australia in Bunnings. The Bunnings website suggests that maybe I meant to search for 'Samantha'. :roll eyes:
So anyway, is naphtha called something else here? Or is there something else I could use to wipe things down to remove any fingerprints, grease, etc, before spraying colour?
It's what's in liquid lighter fuel, so best to look for that. Very flamable, so no naked flames or smoking when using it. Also sometimes spelt as 'Naptha'.
I was always told it is what we call shellite. It's a petroleum based fuel. You used to be able to get it from wollies but Bunning definitely has it. I use it in my camping stoves and lamps. Makes a great parts cleaner for the mechanically minded
White spirits is the name I know the stuff by...

White spirit is a very different thing in the UK. A lot heavier fluid with a much higher boiling point. Takes a lot longer to evaporate.
Awesome, thanks guys. So I'll be on the lookout for shellite, or white spirits. At least they show up in search on the Bunnings website, and don't suggest I want to buy a 'Samantha'.

From reading the data sheets, looks like shellite will evaporate at much lower temperature, so will disappear quicker. It's also specifically mentioned as something to clean surfaces before painting. White spirits looks to be more of a general cleaner, can be used on carpets, etc, but will also get the job done in the shed I'd say.
Weren't mothballs basically naphtha balls?
