Thread: Joanne40's ST-1

    Joanne40's ST-1

I am finally getting around to the build diary. I went with a ST-1 after having a try of Andy's other guitars and being most comfortable with the strat for size and shape to learn on. The kit arrived 2.5 weeks ago and I have been busy getting my sanding on since then under Andy's careful guidance. So far so good.

There was much thought about staining over spraying and if it wasn't for a slight fault in the timber (see photo below) I may have considered staining instead. Alas, fate is keeping me true to what I had envisioned so I will spray instead. Going to be much easier to do a silver burst that way.

good to see the build diary started Joanne, pity about the scratches but as they are on the back you could always fill them with timbermate and still stain it. Glad you are under careful guidance from Andy ! Silverburst will look great too

@ Joanne40 Feel free to check out my Gold Strat build diary, I'm using a can of White Knight Super Gold to to spray pain the body Gold, went through a bit of a rough patch with it, but that was down to Darwin's weather, my impatience, and not giving the paint enough time to dry between coats.

Those visible cracks in the body are a bit of a worry.

A shame about the cracks. But as has been said, filling those with timbermate should do the trick. I'd fill them in stages rather than try and do it all in one go. There's no stress on the body in that location, so once filled and the surface is sealed with paint, they shouldn't get any larger.

I think spraying is the only real way to go if you want a good looking silverburst.

The cracks aren't too bad structurally but definitely makes the decision to spray easier. I finished up sanding and put the timbermate on yesterday. Back to sanding again today! Lucky it's a nice weekend for it.

Definitely looking a lot better with the timbermate on it, it's made the cracks un-noticeable.

So far the weather's been pretty good today so I'll see if I can get a new coat of gold paint sprayed on the guitar I'm working on.

The cracks are on the underside, Doc, so you can't see them!

Hope the sanding goes/went well, Joanne.

Hi Joanne I think you could still go with the stain bit of filler will sort that out, Silver burst will be interesting going for a blue or black burst ? i did a strat with a silver and black it looked ok but changed it to a candy, if your going to spray it run a bit of super glue along the crack will stop the crack opening more under the paint
