Thread: First build

  1. #1
    HI All
This is my first build of a real guitar have made dozens of cigar box guitars so well versed in fretting etc. but this is a bit different.
First of all I didn't just want another copy of a strat or a Gibson, so I purchased a st1 kit basswood body with a maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. Gotta say I'm impressed with the finish of the kit.
have now cut my own shape into the headstock and reshaped the body and pickgaurd so it shouldn't look like a strat. Wonder what you all think good and bad
    Cheers Wasastrat

Welcome along Wasastrat. Great to see you've really owned this process and coming up with something uniquely yours. Good to hear that the finish of the kit's pretty good as well.

Like where you've gone with the pickguard - just thinking how could you make the guitar better reflect the shape of the pickguard.

looks cool Wasastrat, its certainly an original shape. like the mods. As Brendan and Fretty said maybe you can replicate the shape of the pickguard on the body and reshape the lower horn a bit.
What paint/stain colour you got in mind ?

Well, that's certainly different. I approve. Carry on.

    Hi Guys
Thanks for the feedback, I actually did take a small amount off the lower horn not that you can really tell considering how much was taken off the top horn. I wasn't going to change the shape of the pickguard, but then if I didn't it would just scream Strat.
As far as the finish goes... well I should tell you what I'm doing first!
The build is being filmed and documented and will be put on youtube once finished. The title is build an electric guitar the easy way. It is aimed at people without a workshop full of equipment.
So far all the mods have been done with a jigsaw a sander and a coping saw
So the guitar body will be a purple aqua white swirl and the neck is being done in wudtone amber. I wanted something different that you could do without spray equipment.

...such a pity you're only doing this now, I know someone who may have benefitted from this video roughly two years ago!!

Great improvements Wasa! Love the pickguard shape.

I'm watching your build with interest to see how the swirl comes out! Great idea about the video.

    cheers,
    Gav.

look forward to the video Wasastrat, sure new builders will benefit from this, especially the ones with limited tools and workspace.
Have you done the swirl technique before ? sounds like a cool plan
