The PBG B46.....Behemoth bass and guitar kit.

    Lads of Lutherie,

I have been toying with the idea of having a shot at making this two neck beast. I see build threads and one photo series for the 6/12 string dual neck kit, but nothing for the 4 string bass and 6 string guitar.

I was wondering if anybody has made this kit, and if so do you have any tips?

One question straight up for me relates to electronics......there appears to be two volume and two tones, with two three position switches to control 2 x jazz bass pickups and 2 x humbucker pickups. If that is it it means that both sets of strings would be active all the time. From the wiring diagram it appears they share all the controls. I was just wondering if a better option is a third switch that selects the bass or guitar.

Thinking a solid colour spray can job for this one. Primer....base colour....gloss acrylic top coats.

Tone Riders all round...jazz bass pickups and rock song humbuckers.....bigger Gotoh pots....orange drop caps.....Tusq nuts....switchcraft input jack.....maybe crt or gotoh three way toggles.

Any suggestions and advice will be very welcome. 😀😀

    Respect.

Haven't done this one Oz but am currently doing the SGD-612 which has three switches. Seem to work fine to me.

Hey Ozz good questions. I can't recall ever seeing this kit built or a build diary. The SGD-612 has 3 switches and you could flick to the 6 or 12 string using one of the switches
Hopefully your thread may get a builder out of the wood work who has built the kit.
Always been keen to see this beast built.
I doubt there is a wiring diagram may give you an answer to being able to turn either the bass or 6 string off while playing the other

EDIT there is a wiring diagram but it appears to have 3 x 3 way switches

got to head out but will have a better look later

    Ditto.

Was tempted to have a go at this one about a year ago but ended up building 4 separate axes instead.

Sensible control wiring would have master volume & tone for each pair of PUP's and a central 3 way switch to select which neck or set of PUP's are active, with the other 2 x 3 way switches to select between the PUP's on each neck. To try and run piggy back style allowing 2 vol & 2 tone for each set of PUP's would become a mess and hard to trouble shoot if things stopped working.

Edit: Just checked the kit on PBG shop and it only has 2 x 3 way switches, not 3. Probably makes it even easier as you could roll off the master volume for which neck/set of PUP's you want to mute.

    Thanks for the responses guys.

Much respect Andy40 for the 6/12 build. Yeah I see the 3 switches in that one.

In case anybody wonders....this is the kit.....

Wiring looks fairly easy to follow. Just have to get another 3 way switch and figure out where to put it as the body looks like it has only been routed for 2?

Another 'heads up' would be to grab 250k pots for the single coil J Bass PUP's and maybe a 0.022mf Orange Drop Cap and use the 500k pots for humbuckers together with 0.047mf Orange Drop Cap. If you have never done a treble bleed mod, highly recommend it and they are only $2.95 each.

Okay just had a look at the wiring diagram.

The Bass volume and tone are listed as the two holes in the body closest to the neck.

The Guitar V and T are listed as the two holes furthest from the neck.

Page three of the diagram indicates a third three way toggle to select Bass or Guitar or both.

So the volume and tone only work on a pickup when a toggle switch is moved. E.g. Not a volume and tone for each pickup. But you can still select neck or bridge pickup. Okay.

So I could just wire a button.....or mini toggle.....or get a couple of Forster drill bits and make another cavity. Mmmmm.

May have to ponder on this one. Like the idea though.

I get the treble bleeds and have them on all my guitars.

After my read of the wiring diagram I had the same thoughts. J bass single coils....250k and 0.22 cap and 500k and 0.47 cap for humbuckers.

It does appear that a third toggle is the way to go. Thanks. 😀😀

Ozz - just checked the diagram - looks like I'll need to change it - you're right - the wiring is different to the diagram. I'll look into it tonight and get something to Ads tomorrow. Sorry for the confusion...
I'll set it up with a switch for bass / guitar (hole between the guitar and bass) and a second switch for the two guitar pickups. As for pots, I'll give it some thought... I understand that you'd want to manage vol between pickups at both the bass and the guitar.
