Thread: Depth of necks

    Depth of necks

Has anyone measured or know off hand the depth of our C profile necks? That is, the distance from the centre of the back of the neck to the top of the fretboard.

We've been asked a few times and I don't have an accurate way to measure. It's an import measure for people (like myself) with wrist issues, such as arthritis.

A Google search of the subject yields some conflicting results; "Modern C", "Fender C", etc. It's hard to nail down a specific measurement.

    Any ideas?
    Cheers,

    Adam

If you want I can do some calliper measurements and contour gauge impressions at the 1st, 6th and 12th frets for ST/TL and LP kits, if that's of any help. I'll probably get time in the next couple days.

I was looking at my TLA-1R this morning Weirdy thinking the same thing, cept my calipers are terrible. Its definitely a "C" shape at the nut and a "D" shape at the heel.

Hey Weirdy, apologies, I only just though to check this.

If you could do that, I would appreciate it. I don't think there's any urgency know, but I do get a few people asking.

They're a little rough, but I finally got time to finish the raw neck profiles on a selection of PBG kits. Specifically, an LP-1SS (Mahogany neck), ST-1 (Maple neck) and TL-1 (Maple neck).

The profiles are from raw, untouched/unsanded necks using callipers and a contour gauge. The width measurement is the fretboard edge (widest point) at the specified fret and depth/height is the peak of the fretboard to peak at back of the neck (measured directly behind the specified fret). I should note that the TL-1 neck felt particularly 'skinny' for a TL kit while handling it, and the measurements back that up. It was the only unfinished TL neck I had on hand so I had to go with it, but it did seem like an unusually thin example.

The fingers/pins of the contour gauge means the profiles will always be a little rough, but you get the general idea.

Awesome. Thanks Wierdy. completely explains why I can play "Hendrix" type chords on my TL better that my ST but you've gotta be careful with vibrato on the high e on the TL
