Pest, go with the ready made decal idea.
Simple, accurate and above all, easy!
I would not even think about trying to do it with Wudtone.
Practically impossible to get straight, clean lines where the colours join....
Go with the Texan Flag, as your Gal would no doubt say Viva Tejas!
DB, what if I get the star cut out and use a separate piece of wood with white, then glue it into the slot?
Ok then, decal or even vinyl it is!
But I still can't find anything online (vinyl [red blue and white] or any decal makers...)
In Melbourne? ... you might try companies such as these guys who do custom printed and cut vinyl wraps for vehicles (hot graphics, advertising, etc) ...

Wait a minute ... that sounds like Rock and/or Roll!
SG-1 ... "Little Miss" finished in Flamenco Cherry Wudtone
TL-1A ... "Slugger" finished in Antique White Nitro
EX-1 ... "Metal God" finished in nickel-plate (work in progress)
ST-1A ... "Scrapper" stained and finished in linseed oil ... and with the "secret weapon"
GR-1SF ... "Rocker-billy" (just arrived, work in progress)
Following the Texas Flag theme you could print a decal for the headstock using this...
It is one of the Texas Revolution Flags that seems to still be popular now (seen a few Texans on telly wearing hats with it printed on)...
Hey DB, can't I layer the Wudtone if it bleeds?
Like if I do the red one day, leave it to cure then do the red so it site on top? or will I have to sand the blue back to get an even finish?
Or I could break DB's Law #19349 *cough* SM Nitro *cough*
Mow a few lawns, save some money, and you could maybe try a pre-made option... not cheap, but it would be a simple solution that would probably look great on an all white body
The Guitar Garage also sells flag pickguards that may be suitable, like these:
I'm sure with a bit of searching you'll be able to find other pre-made options, if you decide to go that route.
