Hi guys, on the 2nd of June at Albert Park Lake, there is a fun run in Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney. It is to raise funds for research into Multiple Sclerosis, commonly known as MS. MS is a disease that attacks the central nervous system, and can, to varying degrees, interfere with the transmission of nerve impulses throughout the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. Since identification, MS has been the subject of intense, world-wide research but still its cause and cure remain elusive. MS is common in over 23,000 Australians and is 3 times more likely to be found in women than men.
A simple explanation is conveyed by the term itself. Sclerosis is a Greek word meaning "hardened tissue or scars" and multiple means many. Recurring episodes of MS can cause many scars to appear in the central nervous system as a result of the breakdown of the myelin, the insulating material that covers the nerve fibres. This can result in impairment of motor, sensory and cognitive functions to a greater or lesser extent.
I am participating in this because my mother has MS, and sometimes it can be very hard for her to walk.
Below is my fundraising page, where you can donate to this cause, none of this money goes to me or my family, it all goes straight to MS Australia, where it is used for research into MS. If any of you guys are available, you can see me there a bit before 9am on the 2nd of June, the run starts a 9, and I am runner 653. It would mean a lot if any of you guys donate ANY amount of money!
