Thread: Building a BC-1 guitar for my son

  1. #41
Hi everyone! I'm now into full assembly mode and thought I'd share pixs of how I'm doing. The paint looks nice, I've copper-tape shielded up the wazoo, and made a special copper plaque with a pick from the guitarist of a band he likes.

I do have a question abou the two strap mount points. Because the guitar's a non-standard (eg Strat) kind of shape, I'm ot sure where to put the rear mount point. See pic 5. I've put a blue-green square where I think the front one should go. What do you think about the rear one?

The Pitbull video I watched said in line with the neck etc, all the way to the rear of the guitar. But I'm not sure that will work in this case?

    thanks for your thoughts!

    Hi Barno,
check out the pictures at https://bcrich.com/product/beast/

They have the strap buttons a bit further back on the front horn and the other on the back. Not sure if I would have it quite so high on the rear - I think I would have placed it on the side of the body (not the back), maybe a bit like on a flying V.
    PitBull Builds: FVB-4, LP-1SS, FBM-1, AG-2, TB-4, SSCM-1, TLA-1, TL-1TB, STA-1HT, DSCM-1 Truckster, ST-1, STA-1, MBM-1, MBM custom, GHR-1.

Scratch Builds: Pine Explorer, Axe Bass, Mr Scary, Scratchy Tele's.

The little voices in my head keep telling me "build more guitars"

Oh wow - thanks Trevor. I never thought to put them on the back!

I think I'll bput the one at the front on (at the back of the guitar) and then say to my son we'll experiment and let him choose the location for the rear one. I agree, I think it needs to go down a bit.

Great resource - and thanks again!

Tonight is adding the 6 x nuts to the head - that bit should be ok.
Tomorrow testing the pickups and adding the bridge... that should be fun 👍🤣

Tonight I'm adding the headnuts. I watched the Pitbull video for a 3-a-side - there's a preference to lining up the little screw holes in a tidy line. Because of the curved shape that my son's guitar head has, and indeed the holes, this won't be possible.

I think the best I can do is mount them tidily, so the bottom and topmost ones don't come in contact with the actual head when they're being turned.

I've attached a couple of pix to show what I mean and see if there's anything stupid I'm doing. You can see in picture B the holes aren't even in a straight line, so they'll never line up! I understand there are left and right hand ones; I think I have them on the corect side!

The tuners are placed on the correct sides.

I agree that all you can do is mount them tidily! The website, from post 43, also shows the headstock and tuners - they have the winders all parallel to each other. I do not think that is possible for your top tuners as the winders will hit the headstock!

Hi Trevor - that's what I thought! So as tidy as possible, that's how I'll mount them. When I tried to straighten them, they did indeed want to hit the headstock.

Tested the pickups last night - they're working fine.

Tonight I'll get those headnuts sorted.

    thanks!

Tonight is the bridge (nervous about that), and apparently there's a wire I have to feed through from the electric cavity somewhere, and then push a bridge post onto it?

I have 3 of the 4 posts for the bridge etc. I have my ground wire stuck through into the hole where I'm going to hammer the last bridge screw mount....

....but do I just poke the wire through and hope some of it connects with the bridge post as I hammer it in?
Is there more to it than that?

    I've attached a photo.

I'm nearly there... I have 5 days left to add the bridge, bolt on the neck, put on some strings, learn about intonation.

And have a beer.Click image for larger version.
