Project #6 - The TD Tele

About ready to place an order for Project #6. Haven't built a Tele yet, so that is next. It will be called the TD Tele, in honor of an ST that Trevor Davies did, dark though not quite black (mine will be black) with white pick guard, etc. I'm looking forward to getting started.

In the meantime, any suggestions on how to loosen a set neck in order to do a little more work? I tripped and knocked Blue #3 over a while back, breaking the neck loose but not doing too much damage. Don't want to try that again.

Hello and welcome back XP Rider.

It is starting to warm up here in Perth (although today is 16 degrees C and wintery!). I forgot about your liking of the dark ST with the white pickguard. I will put a link here so that others can find the pictures.

As for the neck, is this for the SG style from last year? I like the idea of knocking it over and praying it breaks the join! I have never removed a set neck! Hopefully others will chime in!

I didn't find something a vid that precisely fits your SG issue...but I found a couple of videos that may help. I also looked back at your build diary.

If you used an aliphatic glue like Titebond original or the stuff supplied by PB, the recommended approach is heat. People usually do this with steam or with direct heat.

The non-steam heat uses a copper probe inserted in a small drilled hole that heats up the glue enough to break it's bond.

The probe this this guy is using is from Stew Mac and so ridiculously expensive. I would be tempted to try to cobble something together to do the same thing...but this is a good time to mention that I have never done this.

I have generally seen people insert the steam or the prob through holes that they drill by pulling out a couple of frets and drilling under them.

The good news and the bad news on your SG is that you might not have to do this (that's the good news). The bad news is that it's because the there is not much glue under the fretboard. I suspect that is part of why this broke so easily. Not a lot of good, flat gluing space for the neck, which could make the bond fragile.

The guy in the this vid used the drill-through-the-fret-hole approach, but the reason I included it is to show how he made a shim to make the bottom of the tenon perfectly flat. I think I would want to do this to make sure that you get a good bond on every bit of the neck-to-body contact that you have. I would be tempted to put in a couple of screws as well, but at least get the glue on areas really really flat.

The traditional way to do this is with steam, but it's messy and wet. Of course, Stew Mac sells a cost-prohibitive machine for this as well. It can mar the finish...but that since you made it you can probably touch it up and steam is the tried and true method.

You'll see a number DIY steamers online. I sort of like the espresso machine version like this guy's. I saw one guy use a conventional teapot, but it looked a bit dangerous. I like the espresso machine version because it has a valve you can adjust so as not to get too much steam. Hopefully old espresso machine's at garage sales are as common in your neck of the woods as they are in Miami ;-)

    Hope this helps!

I really like the look of that Strat as well, well deserving to be a model for your Tele build. Still, I can't help but observe the irony that your TD Tele will be modeled after a Strat, given how many Tele's he has built ;-)

I must admit that all the methods of neck removal terrify me!

@XP Rider, how far do the strings need to come down at the 12th fret for the guitar to be playable. Maybe it would worth looking at ways of lowering the bridge a bit!

Haha. I obviously need to build a dark tele with a white pickguard!
