    TD's MBM-1

I managed to purchase the Custom MBM-1 from the specials last week. Mahogany body and neck with a Spalted Maple veneer, reverse hockey stick headstock, and no fret markers. The kit arrived with no hardware - but Adam has since delivered a black hardware pack (thankyou).

The kit looks good in the box. Not sure when I will get around to starting.

Cool looking kit and top. What are you thinking for a finish?

I'm thinking a bright(ish) coloured stain on the spalted maple, and a dark burst. I have googled some ideas for inspiration.

No No No! I did a rainbow before, and it's not really my thing.

Man, that's gonna be a show-stopper! Don't leave us hanging too long waiting to see how it turns out.

Before I purchased the Custom MBM-1 kit (mentioned in post 1), I had purchased a standard(!) MBM-1 kit. I have finally got around to starting this.

Starting with the neck I have sanded to 240 g, shaped the headstock, drilled out a shallow 30 mm hole for my logo on a pearl disk, stamped my serial number on the back of the headstock, cut out a 3-ply truss rod cover, fret levelled, fret filed, filed the fret ends and polished the frets.

I'm still (for the last 12 months) thinking/deciding how I want to finish it!

Next, I will make the body contours a bit larger and increase their angle a bit.

Body contours including a belly contour and arm contour have been added. The before and after shots, including the tools used.

Looking good. I like the asymmetrical headstock. Countours look great. Not sure about a color. I always think of Rick Derringer with when I think of that guitar shape. His was a natural, with a couple of stripes running parallel to the pickups. That seems a common themes with these.

Are you thinking a transparent finish, or solid? Also what kind of music do you think you'll play with it? Definitely not a surf color ;-)

    Thanks fender3x.

Definitely not a surf colour! I'm into blues rock!

The finish will hopefully be transparent with three tones! I want to inlay 2 parallel strips of white (or black stained!) pine, the center block will stay as natural mahogany, and the wings will be stained darker! That is my plan! Hopefully I can pull it off. Solid black is my backup
