New build IB-1F Lefty void guitar.

    hi ladies and gent,
Got this kit back in November last year, after finally clearing my kids junk out of the spare room i claimed it ,dads man cave sign resides upon the door.
Saw an awesome looking purple Ibanez RG for sale and i went from there.
Bought the small cheaper bottles of purple and black dye, that was a mistake.
It was way to light in colour so bought the colour tone bottle it was perfect.
Body was pretty good light stain with the watered down black on the front followed by the purple.
Isn't the same as the purple Ibanez i saw but then again that cost
    $2200.
Sourcing a GOTOH Tremelo black left hand one atmo.
Fitting some GOTOH Tuners that are on there way.
I am looking at something to finish the body want to use the crystalac brite tone, but having hard time sourcing some in australia anyone know where i can get some?

Looking forward to seeing that pop with some finish. Not sure about the crystalac, but I can recommend a 50/50 mix of Cabot's poly and turps.

Thanks for the advice, just looking through the u tube videos there are that many different ways to finish.
its a bit daunting and dont want to stuff it up. Also was thinking water base would be the way to go.

I'm not sure if there is anyone here who has had any luck with a water-based finish. I would be interested if they have. I'm always interested in health and enviro friendly options.

I have tried the crimson water based wipe on finish. Works ok but i reckon you will get better results with a spray.Click image for larger version.

This is how that turned out.

Have you considered using a 2K can? Check out Brad Angove on youtube he has a really good tutorial

I have used water based poly but as with any water based product all you have to do is sand to the finish you want, I normally go to 240 grit, apply a damp cloth to raise any wood fibres, let it dry and sand to remove the fibres and repeat until you get no furry bits. You may only have to do it once but depending on the wood it may take a few times.

I have also put water based poly over wipe on oil based poly but it does take a lot longer. I use the oil base to seal the wood so the water wont raise any fibres and then build up the desired finish with water base poly. You can only do this if the oil base is totally dry. I normally leave the guitar for a minimum of a week and up to a month, depending on the weather conditions, but the most important part is the oil based is totally dry. Much quicker to use water base from the start and is now my preferred finish.

Advantage of water base is no fumes and dries much quicker than oil base. I normally apply with a cloth and no need to soak the cloths in water to avoid fire risks like some other finishes.

    Clear coat time

So bought myself a spray-gun and some cabots gloss clear poly. [water based]
These pics are the second coat had to rub down after first coat as grain raised next coat applied next day as its cooled off in Perth in the last week.
Seems to be getting up a niece shine.
