First coat of colour (most of which will be sanded off) and starting on the unnecessarily complicated headstock:

Colour is more patchy than I was expecting so I might have to think about trying a solid colour. But that would require buying some paint and I'm trying to do this without spending money wherever possible.

Overly complicated headstocks? Music to my ears. Good luck!

What about just assembling it and seeing what it sounds/plays like? Then decide if it's worth spending more time and money on it.

    Simon's secret agenda comes through...

Ok, the stain looked even worse this morning so we're definitely going solid colour. I just need to find some suitable paint.
This does actually give me the option to tidy up a bit of historic damage to the neck.
So currently it looks like this:

Thickening up the sides of the headstock to take the different tuners:

Revised headstock seen from behind (also showing that two layers of veneer wasn't enough. Unfortunately I've now run out of veneer so I'm actually going to have to buy something (washers) to complete this):

Is the idea to get the holes sitting in the middle of the slots, or won’t the nut screw down far enough into the tuner body because it’s run out of thread? If the latter, can’t you cut the screwed end of the nut down a bit so it will screw in?
