Picked up a Zero Glide nut for this guitar, and noticed the nut slot already had a slot for a real zero fret! NO EFFIN WAY!! Going to get a piece of fretwire and shape a nut for it. The Zero Glide can go on another guitar. Lol. Click image for larger version.

That’s a standard Fender-style nut slot. Not all fretboards have a nut at the very end of the board. Fender-style nuts are thinner and have them inset from the end. A zero fret still requires a deeply slotted nut very close to the fret to stop sideways string movement.

The maple fretboard has a slot in the nut channel that matches the depth of the fret slots. A matching piece of fretwire should drop right in there. I could offset the fretwire by removing one side of it, so the tallest part is up against the nut. Then thinning out the nut so everything fits nice and neat. Click image for larger version.

You could do that, but you’ll still need to make another channel to fit a nut in. And you need to make sure that the strings don’t touch the bottom of the nut slots or the very end of the fretboard on their way down to the tuners.
