I got some time for a few jobs on this today:

Sanded and grain filled the body.

Cut and shaped the headstock and removed the factory fitted nut

Tomorrow I’ll sand back the body to see if it needs another round.

Ahh really not sure - I’ve been experimenting with brown/red to amber or yellow fade.

Inspired by sienna sunburst. I don’t think I’ve quite nailed it but I do like them. I’m not sure to use the yellow or the amber.

I quite like the fieriness of the yellow - but with out the finish it’s a little too yellow. If clear coats soften it it might the better choice though.

Don't know what dye/stain you're using, but what about mixing a bit of the amber into the yellow?

I agree the yellow alone is, well... too yellow... but I can picture a shade kind of between the two.

The transition/blending looks pretty good though.

I like both. The transitions are really good. What stain are you using?

Thanks both - these are Crimson water based stains.

I might add some top coat to the yellow to see what it does. On the tele I used the amber and whilst it looks great over the alder it darkened up a lot for a smoky bourbony look. But that might be coz the brown at the edges mixed in further than intended - but I do love it!

I will also try your suggestion, Mc, of mixing some amber into the yellow to knock it back a bit.

I think my philosophy with this is to have a vision that defines the direction but if you find something that feels right then stop. Almost like the guitar is choosing the colour it wants to be #mumbojumboclaptrap

IME, with solid colour paints you can generally end up with whatever you pictured in your head, but with natural finishes I think we need to allow a bit more flexibility (and acceptance!).

However, I do have one tele that got 3 paint jobs (each one a different shade of blue) due to one technical issue, two sand-throughs, and a change to a different brand of paint. That was eff~ing traumatic!
