A good covering with watered down black paint, instant coffee (smells nice!) and garden dirt transformed the nice new maple neck into this. It dried overnight and then had a light sand with #600 to make it silky smooth and feels superb.
Just the right amount of grot for this project...

got a bit of painting done this morning before the rain. I'm using Dunlop Duramax, no primer (like EVH). Black then white on top. Tried to copy the stripes from the Strat body onto the longer P bass, it's OK I think.
Now to relic this paint job, before adding the red

The neck is done, frets polished and leveled, and a suitable amount of crap shoveled into the wood grain. The cig burns are painted on, I tried to do this with a real ciggy on my guitar, but it must be many burns on burns to make that mark, one didn't cut it

If was trying to achieve that, I may have tried a soldering iron and used the long cylindrical part that tip goes into. Don't know if it would work, but that was my first thought.
I've never been a smoker (of cigarettes ) so I wouldn't be able to use the real thing. Especially with how much they cost!

    I don’t smoke either
I think the contact burn with an iron would be too regular shaped?

Possibly, let me finish with the paint and see how close I get. The guitar was close…

Yeah, may be. Hadn't thought of that. I was thinking it would involve sanding the burn mark to get the right shape and graduation though.

Maybe a magnifying glass using the sun?
    That's an interesting approach too!

Maybe using the wide tips of a pyrography kit would produce a nice graduation. Lots of cheap kits on ebay.

Got the paint done, happy with the general striping, it looks right compared with the original I think.
Here's how everything will fit onto the body. Tempting to use a quarter as a thumb rest above the pickups, let's see.
The whole thing will need aging first, that takes a while but will really finish it off

It will have the 'Tone' control for volume (with no tone) and the dummy front pickup (left over from my JB4 kit), a bit like the original
I have drilled the holes for the stock PB pickup, leaving them in the body as EVH did with the stock scratch plate when he cut it down.
