    Hey from Australia

I'm a (very) latecomer to guitar playing at the ripe old age of 65 and have been learning since Christmas. My Christmas present to myself was a Yamaha Pacifica and I'm having a ball learning via Guitar Tricks. As well as progressing from making noise, then sound and now fluking the occasional tune, i also enjoy learning the the technical side of this hobby. And what better way to learn than to build my own. Especially as my wife won't let me pull the Yamaha apart. About to order a TL-1. Fingers crossed.

    Welcome to the slippery slope.
I’m 63, have been playing and tweaking my guitars for 50 years.
My first full build was a Cigar Box Guitar.
    Have fun.

Welcome Steve, you're never too old!!

The TL kit is a good choice for beginners, start a build diary and hit us up for any questions you may have. There will always be someone here who can help.

    Cheers

    Welcome Steve.

I reckon building a kit is a better way to start than pulling apart that Yamaha.

True, and you will learn plenty of ideas to go back and either mod or improve the Yamaha. On any of my store bought guitars most of the cheap thin wire has been replaced with cloth push back stuff, upgraded pots, caps & output jacks with things not made in Asian countries. Yammy's are usually excellent quality no matter which part of the world they are from (probably Indonesia these days) and have found their pickups are just fine, in fact would put a lot of mid range aftermarket gear in the shade. Nuts are probably the only other weak spot but you may be lucky and have a Tusq nut fitted which are better than cheap and nasty plastic.

Best wishes and good luck with your new addiction.

    Cheers, Waz

Congrats - I've done that on more than one occasion - been out shopping for a tele and came home with a strat. But now building two Teles!
