Talking My Build Diary JBA 4M

Just got my Bass kit in the mail today.

excited to get started sanding tomorrow, planning to try and do a "ceruse" style finish on the guitar.
Going to use a blue dye, with black grain filler.

excited to see how it all goes, this is the first kit ive ever tried to build.

Welcome Matt, and good luck with the build.
I look forward to seeing the ceruse finish progress.

    Thanks Trevor.

First day of work is done, i did a mock build and everything looks good.
Then started sanding the body. Ive never done any sanding before, so was a little learning curve. Started using a Orbital, but was finding it hard to keep the sanding along the grain, so i switched and did all the sanding by hand instead. Felt like I had much more control.

I did 120 grit, then 240 grit, but i only had some 600 after that. so i decided to just try and do 600 straight from 240.
i think it turned out okay. Im sure if i had 400 inbetween i might have been easier, but im quite happy with the result still.

    Hi Matt,
I'm sure most folks only go to about 180 or 240 grit when sanding so that stain will absorb more evenly.

This is a quote from Simon Barden re sanding:
"240 at most but 180 is better. You really only need to get the surface flat before staining. Too high a grit and you can burnish the wood surface in places, causing uneven stain take-up. Save the finer grits until after you’ve put your finish coats on. Just nake sure that you’ve removed all the sanding marks from any coarser grits you may have used to start with, as scratches will absorb more stain and show up as darker lines."

    Taken from the thread https://www.buildyourownguitar.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=11001.

I have tried to follow these suggestions with my builds. I'm sure the ceruse style would be the same.

    Regards

    Ah intersting.

so today i tried to start staining the body, and it is exactly like you said. The stain definitely did not take very well or very evenly.
it is still okay, but I'm thinking tomorrow when its fully dry i will give it a good sand with 120 or 240 to help the next coat of stain take much better.

You may need to go back to 80 & 120 to open things up a bit before doing a final 180.

Yeah I went back to 120 today and that seems to have done the trick,
I reapplied stain, and it took much much better today.

gonna do 1 or 2 more coats of stain and go from there

I am also thinking to switch from a black grain filler, to a white grain filler.
As the stain was a much darker blue than i was anticipating, but still excited for the look
