    Lyn #20 - The Lescaster

    Like some other brave souls on this Forum have previously admitted (Ozzie, you’re a legend) Blackdog/boredom has set in again, so its time for a new build.

    WARNING: My build diaries are usually painfully long, detailed and a warts and all journal of each build. Hopefully to encourage others that, while not advisable, it is ok to make mistakes. As per usual I will be using limited ability and hand tools only.

    I wanted something different but as I don’t have the ability to think too much outside the box, designing my own shape is not an option so I thought I would combine two of my favourite guitars. The Les Paul Jr. and the Telecaster. So this could have been a Teleson or a Lescaster. I thought Lescaster sounded better.

    I’ve always yearned for a 24 fret guitar, so without further thought, the journey started with a standard Pitbull 24 fret Gibson neck.

    Mistake #1. A 24 fret neck does not alter the scale length. Duh! It just means that the available space between the bridge and the end of the neck has been reduced so the pickups have to be closer together. How this will compromise optimal pickup spacing? Only time will tell.

    First job shape the headstock. I avoid using propriety shaped headstocks so have decided on something simple. So out with the trusty/rusty fret saw.

    Then I used my DIY notched straight edge and adjusted the truss rod.

    I make sure the all frets are seated properly, tape off the neck, and level the frets using a 12” radius block.

    After levelling the frets I re-crown them with a fret file.

    I then like to double check everything with a fret rocker.

    Last job is to polish the frets. I usually start with 400 grit paper then move onto 000, then 0000 steel wool.

    Next job will be to cut out the body shape. With the problems I had with #19 I will proceed with caution.

    Cheers guys

    Sorry to hear the dog has been/is barking for you again Robin. I like the plan here, what are you going to be pressing into service for the body?

    Hey Frankie, thanks mate.

    I got out my templates and mocked up a few scenarios and a 3x3 headstock just looks sooo wrong on a Tele body. Whether it looks wronger than a LP body and tele hardware I'm not entirely sure. But it will be LP body and Tele hardware.

    As one of these mongrels never existed in the real world I figure I can do just about anything I want. Lol

    My take on this concept last year resulted in my "Les Tele".
    Not a scratch build, but it was made with heavily modified pieces and parts.
    Look forward to seeing where your journey takes you.

    The very first Teles, well they were Broadcasters at that stage, had 3x3 headstocks that are called “snakeheads” nowadays. They are unbelievably rare and I could only find photos of copies online. If you google snakehead Tele you will find pics.

    @McCreed
    That's a really nice looking guitar, well done. If mine turns out half as nice I'll be happy.

    @Frettie
    Well there ya go. It'll be nothing special after all. But it doesn't alter the fact that a Tele with a 3x3 headstock just looks WRONG, and having googled some images, butt ugly too-boot. lol

    Agreed. They just look unfinished. It would be like just finishing a PBG paddle headstock and whacking some tuners on it!

    Hey Robin, Sounds like an interesting build you have in front of you.

    P90 neck & Tele bridge would be the perfect blend of both.

    Hey Waz, I agree (P90's are my favourites) but I have already bought some tonerider Tele pups so will have to go with those for the time being. Can't afford to waste them.

    My concern is that the neck pickup will be closer to the bridge than on a real Tele so not sure how that is going to effect the sound.

    Maybe a bit more like Strat middle pickup which just happens to be my favourite on a Strat.
    Probably the only person brave enough to admit that as most folks only use it in positions 2 & 4, rarely 3 on it's own.
    There is possibly some science behind optimum spots for pickup placement and underneath a harmonic node is most obvious which may not necessarily be right at the end of fretboard.
