Thanks to Eric67 and his glue spots in veneer thread I’ve got a finish in mind.
Golden Teak into Chili Pepper into Mahogany.
So you did the hair dryer thing?
Eric certainly got a great result that way. I'm sure that is the first I've seen/read of the technique. A good one to add to the book!

I like your colour idea there too.

Perhaps I didn’t really do the hair dryer step properly. I ended up scraping out the veneer join with a blade and filling with natural timber mate. Some areas were obviously worse then others. Looks a bit noticeable at the moment, hopefully staining will help. As for the colour, I think I’m going to work pretty hard to get it dark enough not to be pink. Further more I think it will shift to more orange if I was to use Tru Oil.

Maybe try a homebrew wipe-on poly instead of Tru Oil. Poly doesn't have the amber tint that Tru Oil does. (I think the colour in TO is a result of having Boiled Linseed Oil as an ingredient).

50/50 oil based poly/turps will give you a good wipe-on consistency and is every bit as manageable as Tru Oil IMO. You can use gloss or satin poly too.

Yes, poly is what’s going on.
Well, not what I was going for, but you get what you get and you don’t get upset. I’ll work with it.

I think it looks very good. It's quite an even transition, and I reckon it will come alive nicely with a clear coat on there.

Yeah thanks. It’s actually one of those rare situations where it looks better in real life than the photo.
