Thread: Quilted Tele Build

    Quilted Tele Build

It’s been a long time since I have done any builds, but I think I have time to get stuck into this build. Not really sure what to do with regards to finish on this one so any suggestions are welcome.

A couple of issues to get over to start with.
I was thinking about staining the back but I seem to have gotten unlucky with the 3rd piece of wood used on the jack end of the body

This could stick out like a sore thumb if I just stain the back and sides. As much as I don’t want to grain fill and do a solid colour nitro finish on the back and sides this may make me have to consider it.

This is also another reason to do a solid colour. I will try to glue and clamp first rather than fill and spray a solid colour over it. Annoying as I love the grain on the ash overall.

You could have a go at bleaching the wood with hydrogen peroxide to make the pieces a more even and lighter colour. It's been done once before here and worked very well IMO. No idea of the process so you''l have to search for that. But if you can glue up the crack well, without a big join line, then it's worth a go. And if it doesn't look any good then there's still the solid colour option, but before that, a mix of stain with a matching tinted nitro lacquer on top does a pretty good job of blending mismatched woods together if you use a darker colour and several tinted coats.

Natural timbermate mixed with stain colour and then applied can often hide things quite well. At least better than a solid glue joint that may reject any attempt to stain.

This is the second time in the last few days that I have seen a split in the same position.
My advice would be the same again and that is to reject it or at least, speak to Adam.

Filling with Timbermate or similar will do nothing for the integrity of the joint. Clamping ( with any force ) is not a good idea. It will put the end result under constant strain and will split again in all probability. Re-gluing with wood glue is not a good idea as any new glue will not penetrate the wood fibres (already penetrated and cured) which leaves epoxy or cyano in my opinion.

If you do decide to try and fill or glue then I suggest waiting a couple of weeks after the repair before proceeding to any finish on that beautiful quilted top. I would think that if the repair was going to fail then it would be within that period.

    Good luck, whatever you decide.

    Cheers

It’s been a while but I’m back at this one. I opted to contact Adam and as I have heard countless times on this forum he has came through with the best customer service. He has offered to swap the body for a new one.

This is the front with a bit of metho.

Both sides are good. No cracks etc. Dead happy with them.
So I started a good bit of sanding, masked off the sides and sprayed the top.

This is after the first sand back. 3 coats of translucent red sanded back with 320. Not sure where the streaks have came from, I am using an orbital sanded so it’s not sand marks. Anyway, more spraying tomorrow will hopefully cover it up.

    Pickup and hardware shopping soon

When I was building my canoe. the whole thing, unsheathed hull, strong back, the lot, was knocked over by the wind, The hull was full of splits and other chaos (I thought it was kindling). I did some experiments with epoxy, titebond and cyano. The epoxy was thin enough to penetrate, and easy to scrape the joints later with a cabinet scraper. Titebond wasn't so great, and much more of a pain to clean up once it's dried. The cyano penetrated fine, but the fumes arn't great.

Not quite sure what is going on with these dots that the paint won’t take to.

Almost looks like oil or glue specks? Either way I have done a pile of sanding with the orbital sander and re sprayed the nitro red back on a few times now with the same result. I wouldn’t want to sand much more for fear of sanding through the veneer. Any suggestions?

Just a little bump to see if anyone can help with the above problem.

I've got nothing, other than maybe it will be an annoying detail that is only evident on close inspection (which I know would annoy me, too...).

Hey Freaky. I saw this when you first posted, and I too have nothing, which is why I hadn't responded sooner.

My first inclination would be a dodgy batch of paint. Are you using rattle can nitro?

The fact that you've sanded and re-sprayed a few times with the same result, the most common denominator to me is the paint. Those spots almost look like solvent is somehow getting through unmixed.

I'd contact the paint supplier along with your photos and see what they reckon. Sorry I can't be of more assistance.

That's a nice quilt and colour. Hope you can get it sorted.
