So after building a couple of Tele kits, I decided to throw myself in the deep end and try my luck at staining a burst finish.
I’m a vehicle painter by trade and had an idea of adding a candy finish over a stained burst, after googling a few images I set out on doing a blood moon burst, after a trip to Bunnings I came back with some Timber mate mahogany grain filler, a mahogany stain by Feast Watson, and I had some Golden teak stain (also Feast Watson) left over from staining the Tele necks, watched a few YouTube videos and started work.
First jobs was cut and shape the head stock, grain fill the body and neck, stain the whole thing with the mahogany stain, sand back to create a burst, and glue the neck.
And finally airbrushed some blood red candy around the blend to fade the burst, blending the two colours together, also added some candy over the back and neck just to make the mahogany stain pop a bit more, and then more clear coat to finish.
