Hi arie and welcome to the forum.

The main thing you will need is free ........ Patience!
As an engineer you probably already have a natural attention to detail.

Generally, you will need a good supply of sandpaper from 80 grit up through the grades to 2500 or so.
Some people go further.

Nut files are good to have but I use the cheap sets of needle files and then a bit of folded sandpaper to polish the slot.
Get some methylated spirits. This is useful for finding glue spots etc.
Sanding blocks are always useful - I tend to use the cork ones.
Many of the tools can be home-made and work out much cheaper (fret leveler, notched straight edge etc).
I would suggest that you get the tools as you need them rather than ordering a whole set of tools that you may not need yet.

What finish are you considering?

i'm reading up on it now, and it seems fairly doable
i'm trying to understand the parts after the paint - cutting compund? polish?
clear coats?
