It's either Ironbark, stringybark or Merbau I think. It's a bit difficult to tell. It's very heavy, possibly heavier that the stringy bark I used on the deluxster, and very hard.

These were the front steps to my house. A bunch of the treads were really rotten so I replaced the whole thing and just kept some of the better treads to experiment with. I had a mate dress it for me.

looks a bit light on for merbau, I’d say iron bark, it’s very similar to some planking I got from the FIL which is now becoming fretboards.

Yeah part of the difficulty in identifying is that it's quite dark on the outside to a depth of around 10mm and then light in the middle. You can see above on the side how the colour changes. I guess from water etc seeping in over the years. The house is from the 1930's, but I don't know if that stair well was original.

I picked up 4 <1m chunks of r3cycled house yesterday, 120 yo according to the yard guy. All 150mm or bigger wide by 100mm minimum depth. Tallow wood, blackbutt, tassie oak and spotted gum

Oh sounds like a few good bits! I like the idea of using recycled local timbers. I really need a better 'woodshop' setup with a jointer/planer and thicknesser. And laser cutter... and plotter...

I'm thinking a CNC router table might be viable...if I build one myself.
