I've run out of tru-oil so decided to attack the headstock. I will try to do a hockey stick style - not sure if I should paint it black or use a maple veneer and keep it natural.

I have sanded the top to remove the original black finish. Cut the end and side to be square and added a wing from scrap pine wood. I will leave it clamped for a day to let the titebond set .

Hopefully tomorrow I can sand it down.

Sanded the wing added to the headstock into a hockey stick shape. Then glued maple veneer to the top and sanded to the size of the new headstock. I won't do the back at the moment and will see how it looks after some tru-oil.

    Thanks Sonic.

The back - I was going to put some veneer on but decided against it.

Decided to try out a truss rod cover for the pine explorer.
I was after something a little different to the normal bell style.
Not sure yet if I'm completely happy with it though!

A bit large for the headstock maybe . Maybe mimic the overall banana shape and smooth off that top angle?

    Thanks Simon.
It is good to try different things and push my skills. I definitely would not have tried it 30 years ago.

Very brave and a good outcome.
Truss rod cover shape looks good and if scaled down to maybe 70% or 80% may not look so dominant.
