Amazing observation when i opened up the guitar today.
The kit pots were 500k and a B pot was on volume and an A pot on tone. That was the pre-wired up factory kit setup for single coils.
Not what i expected to see. Perhaps i should have taken more notice when i put it all together the first time.

Oh well. Now ive put on my own fat bottom pots in -A for volume and B for tone.
Wired up the rail pickups and given it a bit of a whirl.
While the neck was off i tidied up the higher frets 15and up. I failed to get them right the first time and bending wasnt working over a half step. (How can i pretend to be David Gilmour if i cant do 1and a half step bends?)

    Observation1.
Noticably better than the stock set up.
No hum (of course) but not humbuckery like full size humbuckers.
Maybe i could say they are quite bright humbuckers. Maybe i could say they are quite thick single coils.
    Observation2.
The tone knob does absolutely nothing for the sound.
    Observation3.
Maybe i wont need a treble bleed circuit on this setup.
    Observation4.
Ill have to do some research on how to get the tone knob to do its thing. Maybe different cap?

Ill play with this set up for a month or so and get right back to you.......

Interesting. As mine is still dismantled, I noticed the same pot configuration.
Volume is B500K and tone is A500K.

So experiment by swapping them around?
Can't remember if the tone knob actually did anything so will have to look out for that.

    cheers, Mark.

edit: You didn't move the bridge back a couple of mil?

    edit #2 re-purposed skateboard. hehe.

Bridge move. That was negated after cutting the strings and glueing the saddles. Doh!

There's no guarantee that some of the Chinese manufacturers don't get the A and B pot labelling the wrong way round, so in a case like this, testing a pot for resistance at the 50% point will tell you if it's linear or not (middle tag to either outer tag resistance with the knob on 5 should be the same value if linear, very different if log). I believe the A and B labelling was the other way round many years ago in some parts of the world, and then it supposedly got standardised with A being audio/log. So there may be some makers using old conventions. But it is a convention, not a rule, so as long as a manufacturer is consistent and states the A and B meaning on their data sheets, the confusion moves down the chain to the end purchaser.

Well. All rewired. Very happy with the action and tone. I tried a 0.47cap for tone. Perhaps not a good choice. Will change it for a more appropriate measurement next iteration.

But more importantly............. i got this in the mail today.

    Looks pretty good Oli.

I managed to get mine back into one piece.
I was awaiting the arrival of the Wilkinson tuners whilst the 40-odd coats of Tru-Oil set.

    Impatient once again.
I have similar pickups to yours and find that despite reading lower in Ohms, are in fact putting out a lot more volume than even the Tonerider on my Tele.

Usually have 10 gauge strings, so I've opted to put 11's on this.

Wouldn't account that much in volume you wouldn't think?

    cheers Mark.
