    First build: zebrawood jazz DJZ-4

    Hi All

First post and first build diary.

Last July I ordered a DJZ-4 kit. I don’t have any kind of woodworking skills and I can barely do a basic setup of my basses so this kit was an opportunity to maybe learn something and tinker around.

After shaping the headstock and doing a lot of sanding I got stuck with how to finish the body. I stumbled on a product called Rubio monocoat. I used the “pure” color for both the body and the neck. It was easy to apply, one single application that cured in less than a week. A little more sanding and I am very pleased with the result.

I did a quick assembly and this how it looks now:

Next: needs some work on the fingerboard and I may replace the hardware with black hardware. But it already has a great voice and it’s a lot of fun to play.

Nice job, that Rubio monocoat is a bit steep, hopefully it would do several guitars.
    The web site is impressive.

    Hi Cliff,

Yes it’s a bit expensive (around $55 US for a 350ml can plus 150ml can of accelerator) but I should have enough for a few builds.

The value for me was the easy of use - one coat, brush application, no issues with overlap, quick curing.

It looks good. But unless there is an Australian supplier, the exchange rate and postage will kill. If they can even ship that stuff overseas.

Also, I agree that black hardware would look better.
