Thread: First PB Build: Butterscotch LP Jnr

Thanks! Sounds like a good schedule, gotta resist the urge to rush it.

Coming along very well. I’ll get some photos tomorrow.

Five coats in, just buffed it down with 00 steel wool to even it out, feeling very smooth. At a nice satin now, doesn’t look particularly glossy yet.... how many coats do people usually do?

That's entirely up to you and depends on what "look" you want to achieve.
Some do as few as 5 or 6, some do as many as 50!
I average about 24, but have gone as high as 30. Plus, I sometimes loose track (upper middle-aged brain ) so I round down to the last coat I can remember and go from there.
Making the world a better place; one guitar at a time...

Thanks for the guidance. I think I’m going quite shiny for this one...so many more to go. Loving it so far.

Thanks John, I’m very pleased with it.

Update: 10 coats in or so... I forget... probably more than that but I lost count a while ago. It’s looking shiny though.

Just ordered the final piece (probably should have done it a while ago): A custom wind dog ear p90 from Mick Brierley. Going low output, A2 mags, looking for a sweet warm sound.

I only have two other guitars these days, both partscasters, both with mick’s pickups in them. Sweet tones in my strat, custom wound esquire and p90 in the Jazzcaster. They really are just the best. I debated trying something else or something cheaper off the shelf for this, but there is a reason I sold all the other guitars and not these ones....they sound the best and they play best.

Finally did my ‘mock build’....bit late and a bit stupid to do it so late, but everything seems A OK. Neck alignment looks good, string clearance should be fine. No scale length issues.

Some mild work with the round rasp (never used these before this build, growing to love) to get the bridge bushings to imperial size, but tapped in tight and easy.

    Shielded the control cavities.

Starting to get very excited...also starting to think about buying another one....

That's looking really really good. No wonder you are excited. I also love the simplicity of a single pickup. It's possibly something I could never bring myself to do, which is why all my guitars end up with complicated wiring and switching options. But then the temptation is to spend too much time fiddling. I should heed the advice of The Who and pick up my guitar and play...
Mantra: No more pedals, must finish BlueyCaster...
Disclaimer: I haven't done woodwork since high school, and wasn't really paying attention at the time ...
