    Dying a TLD-1TP?

I was just wondering before ordering my kit, how much it is going to cost to dye it. I'm thinking of getting a TLD-1TP kit, just wondering, how much dye (approx.) I would need to stain just the top of it. Probably a bit poorly worded so feel free to ask what I mean.

Well it depends, but stain/dye goes a long way. I’ve used a few different Feast Watson ones from the green shed. The bottles are about $10 for 50mls which would easily do 3 bodies I reckon

As Sonic says, not much. You are going to want to dilute it a bit as well, as it's easy to add more stain, but a lot harder to remove if you use too much. That also helps it go further.

The biggest expense with dye is when you decide you want to use three different colours.

You know where I could find some medium-light blue stain/dye for cheaper than $15?

Well there are quite a few options. Forum memebr Prozin has had a lot of success using Rit dyes from Spotlight.

    https://www.ritdye.com/products/

There is a huge range of colours to choose from there.

Have a look through his thread here, as you can see the finishes he manages with those dyes and Supercheap Automotive clear are really good.

Be aware if you use Poly or other wood lacquers most blues end up turning green. The automotive clear acrylic will stay blue.

I don't know where (country) you're located, but if AUS, I don't think you'll find much below $15. (see edit below)
Inks will run about the same price IME. You may find some inks for less, but by the time you add postage, you're probably back up around 15 anyway. (unless you have a supplier you where can pick it up)

As for "medium-light blue" you can control the depth of colour by dilution. With inks & dyes, they are typically water-based or alcohol-based. Most timber "stains" will be turps based. So dilute accordingly.

    edit:

You can get U-beat water-based timber dye in a 7-colour pack for $32-$40 (not including post) which would bring down the per colour cost, but may be more dye than you'd use in a lifetime.

Also, looking at Spotlight, the Rit fabric dyes are $27 each.

Yeah, I'm Australian but I can't figure out how to put that on my profile.
