Black Stump or High Gloss Black for my 1st build of DHB-5

    Hi all,

My first Pitbull kit arrived today (I'm at work so I haven't had a look yet). I was going to decide once I'd seen the grain whether to paint it a full gloss black (think black Les Paul) or whether to use a stain. I saw the Dingotone Black Stump Kit but the image doesn't show what it would look like completely finished.

Has anyone used this colour, and, if so, is anyone able to link an image of what this would look like? Would this work with a colour burst style?

I'm a noob at finishing wood (I did do woodwork for my HSC, but that was about 30 years ago).

There was a great discussion about spray paints to use like the Super Cheap Auto, so that is my other option. I'm just trying to decide at the moment.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, wlecome to the forum, BJTC.

Second, it would really depend on the finish you wanted. If you want a painted finish, then use paint. If you want a stained wood look, then use stain.

I am currently using DT Black Stump on my JBA at the moment. I'll try and post a photo but its still a work in progress.

Picture as promised. I'm up to the second final coat. With no cutting or polishing

Thank you for that Andy40. I'm getting a good vibe from this forum.

I'd like to see how that goes with the final coats. That looks great.

I have visualised in my mind something like like this or like this. As this is my first build, I suspect that those kind of finishes may be beyond my abilities. The alternative would be a straight flat gloss black paint. That would be good too, but I'm not sure how many builds I'll do, so I want to make this one as good as I can get it.

I know that to get those sunburst effects will require an airbrush. Are those stains able to be used with an airbrush? Also, I suspect that I'd go for a different colour for the inner burst gradually working to the darker black on the outer.

It wouldn't be too far off the look on that hollow body as lots of guys who have done Black Stump finishes complained about lack of colour coverage.

You can do bursts with stains - there have been a couple on the forum. Depending on what you're looking for - simplest method can be - stain the top with lots on the edges, little in the middle, then lightly sand the middle. See below image.
