I've got to be honest, I quite like what's going on with that colour and the darkening of the quilt. I think it will look sick after several coats of TO. I'm sorry to hear of the issues its caused you, though I think your pain will be worth it by the end, I think this will come up absolutely brilliantly.

Looking a bit more like the wine red you were first thinking of. Should look really good with a shine over it.

Maybe it should be recommended that everyone use GoofOff around the veneer join lines and all around the edges as standard practice before they do anything else to the body? But then with such a thin veneer, there's the danger of the GoofOff soaking through and affecting the glue underneath. It's not easy.

If you'd have done an initial dark colour to try and pop the grain, then put the red over the to, then it would have ended up looking rather like your current finish anyway. The darker tone certainly makes more of the quilt than the initial lighter red did. I think you've got it just right.

Simon I chickened out on using the darker stain to pop the grain because in my testing it looked muddy. It is interesting to contemplate what the difference would have been if I had used the Cherry Red as the base and darkened it with drops of Mahogany Red instead of doing the MR base with drops of CR. Would the grain have gone as dark? Try that another project.

FrankenWashie you was right. I have just completed the third TO coat and the light is starting to get into what I thought was black but is turning into a very dark Red. All part of gaining experience.

I shall resist notifying the media. I'm fairly certain the occurrence is an aberration and will not be repeated!

Hi Greg, darkness was most likely caused by too much Mahogany in the stain mix whereas more Cherry in subsequent applications would have added more depth to the Red tones. Still looks good, just a heads up for next build to always add lighter shades as you go just in case it gets too dark.

    Thanks Waz

As the TO shine comes the "black" has become a rich dark red. It has got redder as more light gets into it. This photo has been taken after 8 coats of TO with a sand (1200 Norton pad ) in between each. Then a sandoff with 1200 wet&dry(dry) and a 9th coat.
Still some grain to fill and shine to obtain.
