That orange as a solid paint on the top and then walnut back/sides would be cool. Faux binding would go down well too

bummer Pabs, you were always paranoid about the thickness of the veneer. When these kits were announced I was keen to buy one but the pre-drilled holes was a deal breaker for me. The factory hasn't fixed the position of the bridge pup cavity either.
Is it possible to try and mix the orange stain with a filler ? or fill and try and stain over the areas you went through ?
I'm with Nicko I'd try and save it before going to a solid paint option.
If the filler doesn't work I'd try solid paint in the same colour and tape off the black binding, might as well keep that visible

There's nothing to fill unfortunately and any more sanding is just going to make matters worse. I'm gonna head out to the paint shop in the next few days and see if they can colour match a paint for me. Here I was thinking I was done spending money on this project.

bummer Pabs, is it possible to put a black burst around the edge ? You still got to hide that veneer join line in the centre

A black burst would have to cover most of the exposed wood. I thought about it, not worth it imho.

yeah that's what I thought, would barely be much orange visible.
Hope you can find some orange paint. Will you need to grain fill it ?

Pabs, this is not a suggestion, as I'm sure you have already thought of this, but I am curious as to the answer...what about buying some veneer and re gluing it?

Hey Andy that is a good suggestion, its awkward though with the binding already on to get the veneer flat with the top of the binding. Plus quilted maple veneer is pretty rare and expensive
