I'm going to be controversial and say that personally, I think G guitars are overpriced lemons, I've got a 2013 genuine USA made G LP Studio, it has always been a pain to keep in tune no matter what I've tried, tried all the usual fixes and they didn't work, tried replacing the hardware with better hardware, didn't work, I'm done with G guitars.
The only good thing about G guitars is that they look good, and that's basically it.
And to be honest, my genuine F guitar isn't any better.

Despite wanting one for ages, I'm yet to play a G LP that I consider worth the asking price. I went with cash to buy one and after playing a bunch went home with another brand entirely.

"What I lack in talent I make up for with enthusiasm"
As I mentioned in the SG Angus tribute build thread, one of my mates has just purchased a 68 SG Junior.
I'm not sure that QC has been high on G's agenda for a very long time, I get it that it was long before CNC but remember it is a set neck and the fit of the pocket wouldn't be acceptable in a kit today.
Having said that I would have it in a heartbeat if it weren't for the stupid prices these things get today.
My 76 Shergold is hand crafted and crafted it is, everything fits properly and the pocket is tight.
I bought my LP Recording in 1985 for $600 (my whole bank account at the time). It's a 1971 model and it's fantastic to play and the tones are fantastic. But I wouldn't pay a cent for the latest models. In this case, older is better.
The thing with those unloved models is , very few will survive, and in years to come collectors will pay through the nose to have one. I think Simon's friend is a shrewd investor.
