Oh. Ok, someone may have a better suggestion but I would first scrape out the holes. Then wipe with a slightly damp cloth. Timbermate is water soluble so this may work. But don't have the cloth too damp or it may lift the veneer. Or, a bit of a super fine wire wooling to get most of it off before a wipe with a damp cloth?

You could also try hitting it carefully with a fine, small headed wire brush, and then dressing the whole face with 0000 Steel wool

Hand crafting guitars, because Death Rays are expensive.
scrape out the tuner holes as best you can.
bunch up some t shirt material, or thick cloth like and old face washer and wrap it around your finger.
soak it in water.
rub /scrub the area you don't want timbermate on... rotate the cloth and keep it pretty wet, you should be able to get pretty much all of it off.
remember that any water running back through the tuner holes will affect it on the other side, but let it dry and simply re apply

Thanks for the advice guys.
Sorry for the late reply I spent all day in bed yesterday so I didn't get back to the project at all.
Depending on how I feel tonight after work, I'll try a damp cloth to remove the excess that dribbled through the holes.
I removed the tape last night to see how the edges came out, and they look perfect, so at least I know I can do that right!

Ok, first things first, Thanks again for the assistance guys, the damp cloth worked a treat!
I'll let it dry properly overnight, and give it one more wipe over tomorrow, but the majority of the timbermate has gone.
I sanded back everything else to 240grit, and I'm really happy with how it is all going so far.
I should have some nice figuring on the back looking at how this is going so far.
I'll go to 320, or maybe 400, and then go with the black stain.

The end grain is a pain in the rear, but I'm getting good results following the growth rings, Is that the right way to sand these to a good finish?
Sorry, that's not the most in focus photo, but you can see that I have the end grain curving in different directions.
I initially started sanding across that grain, not thinking very clearly, and getting plenty of scratches into the wood.
I then started sanding vertically, which was better, but not ideal. I then started following the curve of the growth rings, and it's starting to look much better.
Any advice in this area would be most helpful!
