First coat of clear, and what a difference! The dull brown now comes alive with the reddish glow. The blotches you can see on the back have faded hugely as I completed the first coat, but are still there a little. No blotches on the front, let's see what happens with subsequent coats and sanding...

First clear coat settling in. This is the exact colour I had in mind! The blotches seem to be fading, hopefully they will continue to be less noticeable.

Ok it's stripy, so back to the sanding! Funnily enough, under artificial light it looks fine, the daylight shows the problem.
So, I'll wait until it drys, a few days, and start the flat front and back again. I'm hoping the neck, edges and headstock are ok, but I doubt it, I'll probably just clean it all off again 😕
I will widen the spray pattern on the air brush which will hopefully solve the issue.
Weird, but you really can't see this until you get a couple of coats of clear on...

Hmm, unless anyone has a better idea, I'm going to wait for it to go nice and hard, rub the front and back panels back with 600 grit and give them both another coat of stain, then keep going with the clear. If I try to take the front and back right back to timber I'll ruin it I'd say. If that doesn't work it will be a huge job to take it all off again...
I think it might make it a bit darker, but the edges are already darker due to the concentrated way I followed the contours when spraying the stain. I'd rather then than stripy...

Looking at the original unpainted body, I can see where the issues originated.

Hmm, maybe not what you wanted but it looks good to me from what I’ve seen. Good luck with the alteration.

You might be right re the original body, although I suspect it is the air brush tracks in the stain as well...
