Maybe just something to pop the grain a bit and then clear coat. You want to see the spalt, so any colouring applied does want to be delicate.
The veneer is paper thin on these kits. I think it was wokkaboy earlier on that suggested leave it natural rather than run the risk of going through the spalt.Originally Posted by Simon Barden

Give it a light wipe with a slightly damp cloth. This will give you an indication of how it will look with a clear finish. Don't over do it though. I didn't pop the grain on mine.

Cheers Zandit I'll give it a try tomorrow. That's good to know you didn't pop the grain on yours. Just did a touch up coat so its wet at the moment. I'm quite happy with this one so far. Less mistakes hahaha. My first build was a disaster and you can see where I went through the veneer.
You can sand down a fair bit before breaking through - though there's no indication that it's going to happen, it just does. Went though the veneer on my ES-3 when sanding down trying to remove my abortive 1st sunburst. Luckily it was in an area where there was a lot of dark tobacco going, so it wouldn't be noticeable.

Thanks but I'm just not comfortable with my sanding as I have been a bit aggressive. Have a look at my first build and you will see what I mean. This veneer especially near the pickups looks thinner than a piece of paper. What page number shows this on your ES-3 build?

The top picture on post #5 in that thread shows it best - mainly around the neck pickup hole and a touch around the bridge pickup hole.
Ah yes I see it now. It wasn't that bad. My first build was allot worse.

I have decided to play it safe and just go clear on this one. I'll try and get some off cuts of spalted veneer to practice on for future builds.
If anyone knows anywhere cheap I could get some that would be helpful? I'll do a search online too.

I can see you had some problems with that build! Getting masking tape to stick onto concave curves is never easy. Even i have problems. I find it best not to try and do a concave curve with a single piece of tape, but use two or more pieces, so that there's less tendency tor the tape to lift.
Have you still got problems with the electrics on that first guitar?
