You can always scuff it up a bit with a bit of light sanding say 240 or 320 to get it to take a bit better. I would only do this once though.
I usually apply the stain coats in a circular motion and work it into the wood, then wipe off in the direction of the grain.

the colour will deepen as it cures......patience......I have no doubt it will go darker.

Looking very nice, I'm itching to get into my build now!
In regards to the sections not taking stain, are they glue spots perhaps? If so, you can use some very fine wire brushes to scuff up the timber a fraction so the stain has a path to soak into the grain. Using 0000 steel wool will compress the grain and polish it, essentially making it harder for the stain to soak in.
BTW, I can't take credit for those information. I read it in a thread here about 20mins ago!!!

Thanks Andy, Waz and Zandit for the info. There is one spot that looks shiny that didn't take any stain at all that I might try scuffing with 320 paper, just to give the stain something to hold onto.

There are some long drying times coming up as the finishing coats go on... I need a new guitar project, so I've bought a non PBG Telecaster kit to fill in some time.

You know how it always rains just after you wash the car? Broken Hill humidity is usually really low, I have two guitar bodies and necks ready for finishing and its raining. I'm not going to complain too much, we need every drop we can get, time to work on the electronics.

Tell me about it! We've been lucky in Brissy latley but over summer Waz and I had a humidity nightmare.

Suggestion: I always like rainy days to work on the neck...you know...make sure its straight, level the frets, (replace the fret dots - if you have them) and dingo wax the fretboard and polish it all up and let it shine!! I can spend hours doing this

That's a great idea Andy. I put the stain coat on the 2 necks today, the dingotone will take extra time to dry, but it will dry eventually. 90% humidity this morning, 71% now, rain forecast for tomorrow, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday.

both builds are looking great Andrew. The PBG1 is getting nice and dark. What sort of paint are you using on the gold tele ? looks just like mine. I am on the home stretch with mine
