It sounds like the conductive carbon has lifted, and is causing grit on the wipers to sound like sand being crunched under it.

The carbon comes away very easy when i scrape some away to make no load pots, but it shouldnt come away like that on a new pot.

Heres a 500k pot i have taken off some of the carbon to make a no load (where the 2 lines are), that ring is where your problem will lay.

My electronics upgrade maybe just around the corner.

Existing tone pots dead. It sounds like I'm crushing cockroaches in them..

This is the sound unplugged, not amplified! I'll still upload a demo. I think I'm just getting the raw single coil in each switch position now. Sounds good Lol.

Hmmmmm....those tone pots do sound like they might have some dirt in them, what you could try doing is give them a spray with some electrical contact cleaner, then work the knobs back and forth a few times.

You can buy a spraycan of electrical contact cleaner from Jaycar Electronics, the type you're after is the one that doesn't have lubricants in it, just Isopropyl Alcohol.

Nice new setup mate, as for the pots, for what they are worth I'd replace them too

Yep, I'm going for replacements Stan. I think I've rummaged up all I need in my spare parts box. I may also convert the tone pots to 'no load' as a bit of an experiment

I like no loads because they take the pot out of the equation, i love a tele bridge pickup wide open for instance, the natural tone of the pickup is very nice when cutting up with some slide playing.

When wiring a strat, as you are probably aware, the strat bridge pickup has no tone control on it. What i did for a mate recently was a piece of wire across from the middle tone on the switch to the vacant lug in the middle, right next to it, i then put a no load in the middle pups volume control, this gave him a no load on the middle and bridge, he keep the stock 250k in the neck, he liked the tone on the neck pup with some load on it.

Ok, some demos before I pull this thing apart. Then I'll do the same again once upgraded for comparison.

One riff. Vid 1 = low gain, Vid 2 = higher gain (both on mid/bridge) then Vid 3 = riff in each switch position (neck, neck/mid, mid, mid/bridge, bridge).

Also note this is all stock with the faulty tone controls.

Also notice the decal has gone. This is in prep for a bit of steel wooling & TO of the neck. I've got a new decal printed.

Sounds good so far. Just curiosity, it looks like you have done most things on your list prior to the video except for the electronics and fret markers?

Ah yes. Further upgrade was contingent on it playing well beforehand. (to avoid more expense & time) The tone pots carked it after doing frets etc... Not the plan... It could have been left as is..
