my 4D buddy Wayne used black cable ties for the fret slots - had to saw the slots a bit wider but they look cool. That's on a maple neck though

Ponch there's a chance some filler may come out when you sand it so you may have to re-fill again
    Current Builds and status
scratch end grain pine tele - first clear coat on !
    JBA-4 - assembled - final tweaks
Telemonster double scale tele - finish tobacco burst on body and sand neck

    Completed builds

    MK-2 Mosrite - assembled - play in
Ash tele with Baritone neck - neck pup wiring tweaks and play in

Black cable ties would look cool on a maple neck. Looking at my recent effort it looks like a small bit of additional filling on the sides of the fret slots. The top part now feels as tough as concrete so will be interesting to see how this goes....

Ok very quick sanding to test the waters. Comes up ok just a few spots to fill along the edges but should work out ok with a thorough going over.

    Looking good Andrew.

I am about to do the same on a $50 cheapie bought on Ebay and remembered DB mentioning a while back that the plastic pot plant description labels were around the right thickness and bought a bag of 50 for less than $4 at the BGSFOS. Not so sure about coating the fret board as I had a Yammy fretless mid 80's that had maple strips on what might have been ebony or rosewood board and used Rotosound round wound strings. It sounded great with no damage from the strings. Big fan of round wounds for the brightness of sound as compared to Flat Wounds which I feel are tonally dull and dead. Each to their own as there are plenty of low enders who love a really dark and muddy sound. Just hanging it out there that round wounds can work and sound OK on a fretless.

Hi Brendan, how did you trim them up? Before or after inserting them in the fret slots on the Fret board?

Rough cut before going in, glue them in, then carefully with a blade so that they're the slightest bit proud - finish with sandpaper.

OK. Fretboard levelled with a 12inch radius block. A nice colour has appeared in the rosewood. The fretboard radius also looks better looking from end to end. Then ensuring fretboard was flat I applied 3x coats of CA glue. Applied using blue nitrile glove & finger. Goes on smoothly and quickly. After this has cured I'll sand out flat and do a few more coats of glue / wetsand smooth. Then onto cutting the headstock and finishing the rest of the neck. Getting the fretboard done was essential in carrying on with this build and it looks like I'm almost there with it which is good.

I've also noticed after sanding the fretboard marker dots have lost the pearl look and are white. Maybe the CA glue reacted with the dots. Anyhow perfect as this is what I wanted!
