Thread: Oli's ES2

  1. #21
I used a water based lacquer I got from a specialized paint shop. It's what I got when I asked the dude for which product to use for my build. I even showed him pictures of the expected end result.
I guess I did it all wrong.
The sanding was done entirely by hand, especially to avoid destroying the top layer. I'm looking for a decent stain now. :-)

I went to a specialized luthier shop in Brussels today, asking for blue stain. And they looked at me like cows look at a passing train. Just empty faces.
Screw them. I went to the hardware store, bought clear stain, bought coloring dye and made my own deep blue stain to use on my guitar.
    And it looks wicked.

well done Oli, that blue looks very cool indeed and the cap looks awesome. Are there a couple of scratches/machine marks in the headstock ? might be the angle of the photo.
That quilted maple cap in dark blue really looks like a swimming pool effect !

Hey Oli, sometimes you have to become your own expert to get anywhere.
Your project is now looking fantastic after a somewhat difficult start.
I think this guitar will be a real winner soon.

I sanded that thing until it was as smooth as my lady's buttocks. And I assure you, those are really fine buttocks. So I believe it's the angle.
I'm applying another coat tonight (Which is probably in the morning for you guys, due to the time difference) and post the results.

good luck Oli, sure after another coat the blue will deepen a bit more, should look very nice.
I like the idea of gluing the neck before the finish, should make the neck/body join more of an even finish

Almost there. I will sand it down one more time to lighten the edges and bring out the blue more, maybe patch up some of the lesser spots and then it's off to the lacquer!
