Great question and timing of the question because that's exactly what I am fighting with at the moment. My thoughts are heading in the 'Thingy' direction, just cant bring myself to cover up the grain...

Keen to hear what others think?

    How about this...

Cut a copy of the chrome pickup surround out of clear pickguard plastic, take a photo of the grain/finish beside the pickup rout, tweak the colour as necessary then print it onto a transparency or paper (and then laminate/plasticise it), trim to size and glue to the back of your clear pickup ring. If it works you'll have an almost invisible pickup ring. Or, if you have an Ash offcut with similar grain, try making a thin wooden ring and body mount the pickup.
    Scott.
