Thanks for the advice guys. Pulled my head out and sanded back down to 600 then re stained the problem areas. A couple of them are almost invisible while the two major ones (on the front and on the edge of the belly cut) are much less noticeable. I can live with it. Then a mist coat and three more wet coats of clear.
And back in the cupboard for another three to four weeks to cure. I must say, I am so much happier with the finish straight out of the can this time around. Mostly from having a flatter surface to begin with, but conditions were more appropriate (wind and temperature wise) and will mean it will be a lot less work to sand out in the end.

Wet sanding went far better this time around, and polishing has begun.
Doing it all by hand, so it might take another day or two of contemplating buying a power buffer and ice packing my right arm. Fun times.
