Played some more with the head stock design. The last one I thought was going to be the one, but the more I looked at it, the more out of proportion it looked. It was too long. It's amazing the difference 20mm makes(That's what she said!!) to the proportions!

Stupid Photobucket randomly flips some of my pictures!
Putting the outline on the headstock(Yes I know this is pointless as I still have to apply the veneer!)

Depending on my workload with the Band Championships this week, I may cut and glue the body pieces together, and have some fun trying to get this veneer flattened out. Luckily I have plenty of it for trials.

Haha, they could almost pass for twins!
At this stage, the body isn't even glued together, I had just finished cutting them to a rough length. There's 4 pieces there of 30x65mm Pine at about 470mm long. I need to scuff them with some course grit paper before I glue them together.
I played around with soaking some veneer today and pressing it between some heavy pieces of scrap metal at work. I've left three veneers there over night. We'll see how they look in the morning.

Hmm, we might have some success!
The three veneers I flattened overnight seem to be holding their shape at the moment, even though they are still a little damp.
I'll let them air out now, and see how they are by the end of the day.

Looks like they will have a very slight bow to them, but when they get clamped to the headstock, they should be fine.

Wow, I spend three days away from the site thanks to the National Band Championships, and the site goes bonkers!!
I had to take a nanna nap part way through checking out everyone's build threads!

So, for those interested, the Championships did not go as planned for us, even though we performed better then ever before, we got creamed on a couple of things, purely because the adjudicator was not a fan of how we played certain aspects of the music. I'll get to listen to his remarks tomorrow night.
We received a lot of feedback from people in the audience, not just from followers of the band, but members of bands we were competing against, who all said our choices of music, and delivery were excellent. You could hear the sounds of shock when some of our scores were read out. Very deflating unfortunately.
A few really good positives, were our Junior Band coming 2nd in their class, and we came second in the Street March section. Our Drum Major(The person leading us in the march) won the best Drum Major award in our division!

So, what happens now? Well, now I have time to start working on my build. I go back to one night of Band Practice, not 4 or 5!!
Right now, I have been thinking of what I'm going to do with the head stock. The Veneers have dried nicely, and pretty much kept their shape.

Due to the amount of cutting and shaping I have planned for this head stock, I'm not going to get much effect out of the colours of the Black Heart Sassafras. I'm thinking painting the headstock is going to be the best solution. This way too, I will not have a selection of nice BHS for future builds!
Of the three samples I cut, I'll use the two outer ones as pictured above. They are the flattest, and will require the least amount of filling prior to painting.
I'll also get the body glued together during the week at work.
Wednesday Night, I'm looking to get back some form of fitness. I've been too lazy over the last couple of years, and a nearby gym has started offering a martial arts 1hr workout. It's a blend of Brazilian Jujitsu, Thai Kwan Do, and MMA.
It's not going to be the same as what I used to do many years ago with Vietnamese Kickboxing, but it'll be a starting point!

Shame about the band results. Sounds like you were robbed. Do the judges vary from year to year?

I understand what you're saying about the veneer. There won't be much surface area to display the fine detail on those pieces, though there's nothing to stop you getting a more obvious veneer in its stead.
