So let's see what I have to deal with on the flame top.. Sanded body upto 400 grit, very lightly on the top then wirewooled the binding.

The plan is to pop flame with red mahogany colortone, sand back, then burst yellow, red then mahogany / black mix around the edge. Side, back and neck red colortone mixed with mahogany (keep on the darker side) then black on the face of headstock, all with lashings of tru oil.

Flame popper applied to top without incident apart from 2x nasty glue spots, time for some serious wire brushing once dry. There are some other faint glue areas but these will come out when I sand back the top.

looks good the first base coat Andrew, those glue spots don't look too bad. My ES from about 2 years ago the cap edge was smothered in glue. Sure they will be less obvious next coat.
Just be super careful not to over sand these caps.
I like your colour plans sound very nice

    Bit more progress this evening
Sanded back the cap, then colortoned the burst. I'll let this dry overnight then patch up a bit tomorrow.

First two pictures of cap no flash, third with flash so you can see the flame.

Thanks guys, it was a bit of a mad science experiment but worked out ok (never been brave enough to try this..). Hopefully it will look like the flash picture with the tru oil applied!

Now to mix some dye for the sides, back and neck...

Burst touched up this morning, I think I'm good on this now and don't want to fiddle with it too much. I'll give this a soak of truoil once dry (to seal it up) then stain rest of guitar.
